Lesson 3: Young and E Safe: Empathy (20 minutes)

Empathy is the ability to identify and understand the feelings, motives and actions of another person. Having empathy allows a person to stop and consider what is happening for another person, and then use this understanding to respond in a compassionate way.  Compassionate responses are empathy in action, including what to say and do to connect with and support others.

3.1: I feel for others video

Do you show other's empathy online?
The following video is about how to show empathy online.
"I feel for others"
Demonstrating empathy online is the ability to recognise and respond to differing viewpoints and opinions in a way that takes into account others’ feelings and beliefs.  Empathy online can be challenging when attempting to identify and understand another person’s perspective and feelings through text-based communication.

3.2: Empathy definition

Teacher-led definition of empathy
Empathy is the ability to identify and understand the feelings, motives and actions of another person and respond in a compassionate way. Empathy is different to sympathy. Sympathy is “feeling sorry for” someone or “pitying them” but not necessarily understanding what they are feeling.  Empathy is where you focus on understanding them, walking in their shoes and supporting them.
