Lesson 4: Young and E Safe: Respect (20 minutes)

Respect is having regard for the feelings, wishes and rights of others. This lesson will develop students’ understanding of respectful online communication and increase their capacity to respond to online situations in a positive way.

Teacher Notes:
Activity purpose: Students will understand the value of cultural differences
and diversity and learn strategies to respond respectfully to others online.
IMPORTANT: Read the following background information before the lesson (Click here to access)
  • ​4.1: Facilitate a class discussion with the class focus questions.
  • 4.2: Break students into groups of 3-4. Direct them to download the MS Word Australia Day respect worksheet, read through in their groups and complete the activity.
  • 4.3: Show students the "Indy Mindy" video (1.03 minutes) and faciltate a quick conversation with the class focus questions. Direct students to downolad Indy Mindy post worksheet and palce in their Cyber Safety folder and complete individually. Go through the answers. (Click here for the answer sheet).

4.1: Respect class discussion

Class discussion on respect with the following questions:​
  1. Have you ever felt disrespected online or have you ever witnessed disrespect online?
  2. How have you dealt with a situation like this or how have you seen others deal with it?
  3. How can you show mutual respect to those who have a different opinion/ viewpoint?

4.2: Australia Day Facebook post

You will view a Facebook post from Australia Day and use the worksheet to write respectful comments in your group.
Background information:
​Australia Day raises different opinions in the community. It marks the day Aboriginal people first saw the tall ships enter their waters into Port Jackson, It marks the day Aboriginal people first saw the tall ships enter their waters into Port Jackson, New South Wales, as well as the start of many changes that negatively impacted Aboriginal culture.
For this reason, many people in the Indigenous community call it ‘Survival Day’; others call it ‘Invasion Day.’
